Alright, I wrote this as an entry to The 'Possibility' Contest 2012 (I featured a link to the contest rules and information in the description at the bottom)

The possibility for this entry? What would happen if zombies really did exist and our long time on Earth may come to an end? Well, here's my prediction!
:D

- - -

"The day the world ends, no one will be there, just as no one was there when it began. This is a scandal. Such a scandal for the human race that it is indeed capable collectively, out of spite, of hastening the end of the world by all means just so it can enjoy the show."

-- Jean Baudrillard

Many people have tried to predict the end of our world, every one of them failing. Paranoia strikes many deep within once mentioned of the chaotic destruction of our planet. Horror movies and television series try to help us predict what would happen in this case, either from unknown creatures or deadly diseases, and the question we all seem to have at the end is always the same.

All we could hope for if we are ever faced with such tragedy is the survival of our race and planet. So, what if our nightmares and fears were to become our horrible reality?

How would we survive?

- - -

Alfred F. Jones was the human representative of the United States of America. When the critical zombie virus had struck a small town in the U.S.A., all of the nations were called together for an emergency meeting. The unknown virus had begun to spread vastly in the number of victims throughout many small towns. Many scientists had been called in to try and find a cure, but all attempts seemed to fail. Eventually within the first few weeks, many different countries were reporting similar cases of the disease overseas.

Every ones fear was beginning to unveil as many of the countries populations were slowly becoming ridden with undead cannibals.

There wasn't any hope left on our planet. All that remained of most of the cities were ruins of buildings and the mutilated bodies of our loved ones.

Day 235

As Alfred ran through the ruins of his town, he stopped when he found an abandoned building he was sure they would never be able to find him in. He franticly ran inside being careful as to not alert any nearby "walkers" .

He entered the building and cautiously wandered through the hallway of an abandoned hospital.

"Shit." Alfred muttered. If he was in a hospital, there was surely a morgue, and a morgue meant bodies and remains.

Alfred slowly opened a door to an examination room, making sure to be quiet. He poked the muzzle of his pistol in first, gently nudging the door open. But, as soon as he did, his ears were met with the deadly creaking noise of the rusty hinges. He bit his lip to silence his curses as he stood still for a moment. Alfred was getting ready to fall to his knees and pray to God that the loud creak didn't attract the attention of anyone or "thing". He'd barely been able to survive the last wave of zombies he had come face to face with.

Beads of sweat were starting to form on his forehead as he heard it. The sickening snarl of the undead was approaching to Alfred's location. Alfred swallowed the lump in his throat as his palms began to sweat as well. He backed into the vacant room and waited for the monster to find him.

His adrenaline was pumping and his grip on his gun was tightening. The suspense was too much for him alone, but after the last encounter being a close call, his only hope was to fight for his survival. The challenged footsteps were getting closer and closer. . .

As he stepped further into the room, his back already pressed to the wall, he began to see the feet of the zombie from the doors small opening. The creature had stopped moving and began to slowly try and push the door open. The door to the room didn't have a lock, so Alfred could only stand and wait.

The zombie lunged forward, using his shoulder as a battering ram, successfully ripping the door off of its hinges. Alfred swallowed the lump in his throat and raised the muzzle of his gun towards it, finger on the trigger, ready to fill his skull with lead. The zombie swiped at him with its rotted hand, trying to scratch him. Alfred knocked the zombie's forearm with his gun's butt before killing the beast with a single bullet to the temple.

The zombie howled a sickly groan before falling to the ground in its demise. Alfred stood above the creature for a moment, his breath ragged with anxiety.

"America! Are you in here!?"

"Aya! Don't push me, aru!"

"Ah, Germany, why do we have to be fighting off such scary monsters!?"

Alfred jumped slightly, but calmed after he realized the voices belonged to his friends. He turned toward the remains of the door, seeing them each make their way towards him.

Feliciano -- the most timid of them all -- looked down at the zombie, a worried expression flashing across him before being overcome with happiness.

"America, you're okay! And you managed to kill him without being hurt! That's great!" Feliciano hurriedly rushed over to his ally, only to forget about the broken door, tripping over it. Alfred bit his bottom lip, stifling his laughter, watching his other ally Ludwig; quickly latch onto Feliciano's collar bringing him back to his feet.

"Thanks, Germany, I almost fell!" Feliciano smiled brightly.

The German nodded and returned his gaze to Alfred, cracking a strained smile with his usual serious expression.

"Well, it appears you're safe and uninjured, so I suggest we all return back to base before more happen to 'stumble' upon us."

"Hold on a bloody minute! Before we go back, we need to discuss why you--" Arthur jabbed a finger in the air towards Alfred's face, slightly grazing the tip of his nose. "You're the one who ran off in the first place! I understand that now is not a practical time to bicker, but it also happens to not be a time to flee like some idiotic wanker!"

Alfred retorted, "Big talk, caterpillar eyebrows! I don't see you taking any precaution in this situation! Listen to how loud you're yelling!"

Yao -- the oldest, and the most astute -- lightly pushed his way through the men, interjecting Arthur.

"If I may intrude, aru, it seems as if you're both right in different ways. One, neither of you should be yelling, and two, Arthur is right Alfred. It would not be to wise to run off in this time of peril."

Arthur smirked slightly at Alfred before agreeing with Yao. He did have a point; a zombie apocalypse isn't exactly the most necessary place to start useless arguments. Hell, whenever the virus had slowly began to spread worldwide, none of them seemed to want to argue -- due to the fact that the survival of our people was gradually beginning to fall on its last leg.

"Da, but as much as I love to see you all fighting, I'd also love to see us make it out of here alive." All of the men looked over at the other ally, Ivan -- the most powerful -- and stopped talking.

"Ve~, Russia's right and it's practically the first time he didn't say anything creepy!" Feliciano chimed in, breaking the awkward silence.

Russia smiled almost childishly, before patting Feliciano on his head. "Of course I am right; comrade, plus I would love to save the pleasure of you all begging for mercy for myself. . ."

"And, there it is. . ." Canada muttered, laughing slightly.

"Ah! Germany, did you hear that!? First it's zombies now it's ghosts!?" Feliciano shivered, disturbed by the sudden foreign voice, even though the voice belonged to their more "unseen" ally, Matthew. Everybody laughed slightly but they still seemed a bit cautious over the voice.

Back at home base

Everyone gathered around the fire, each one on their own small wood stump. Alfred was busy melting his marshmallow on his stick, but was sulking soon after he found out they had run out of chocolate. Ludwig, Ivan, and Arthur were busy conducting an escape plan out of the United States. Ivan and Ludwig had recently picked up a distress radio telegraph from a nearby emergency radio tower. Sadly, the message ended with horrible choruses of pained screams and shrieks. All of the "nations" knew that their chance of surviving this dreadful ordeal was to evacuate the current town they were sheltered in, and move on to a more secluded place. Hopefully, one where the infected victims weren't as profuse in numbers.

"What are we to do now, dear Angleterre?" Francis cooed. Now, Francis is the more promiscuous ally of the group, and tends to push people's buttons.

"How the hell am I supposed to know, you damn frog!? We're stuck here until we can construct a practical and safe strategy to escape." Arthur sighed and ran a hand through his blonde hair.

"Oh. Hey, hey everybody! Guess what?" Feliciano chimed in happily, his mouth covered with the remains of his marshmallow. Everyone turned their attention to Feliciano and waited to hear what the goofy Italian had to say. Feliciano beamed with happiness as he turned around and bounced off, only to return with his grumpy brother Romano.

Behind Romano and Feliciano were Ludwig's brother Gilbert, and his friend Antonio. Romano detached himself from his brother's vice-like grip on his body, and stuck his bottom lip out in a childish pout.

"You bastard, I hate your god damn hug therapy!" Romano yelled as he clenched his fists tightly. Antonio laughed and rubbed Romano's head, making sure to miss his "special" curl.

Ludwig looked over to Feliciano and sighed.

"Hmm, something wrong Ludwig?" Ivan asked, as he continued jotting down his side notes. Ludwig nodded and ran a hand through his disheveled blonde hair.

"I don't know about that bo-- er, I mean man." Now Ludwig was mentally kicking himself for being so unusually nervous. I mean sure, it was a dangerous era for them, but it wasn't a time to be so careless.

Ivan smiled as he looked over to Feliciano and his brother. "Those two? Don't worry about them, da? What's the worst that can happen?"

Ludwig looked over to Feliciano and swallowed the large lump in his throat. The worst that could happen to them was what he feared the most. What would happen to him if he ever got separated from the group and was left to fend for himself? He knew Feliciano wasn't that courageous of a fighter, and he also knew that if he ever came face to face with one of those monsters that the outcome would not be well.

"I'm heading in for the night; can you finish the plans by yourself?"

Ivan looked up at him and nodded happily as Ludwig began walking over to his tent.

Day 236

Ludwig didn't see why he even bothered with trying to sleep. He had been tossing and turning all night, worrying about the upcoming day. Finally, today they would be able to escape to their new "Promise land". Ah, maybe he would be able to rest after all.

Bang!

Bang!

Bang!

The chorus of gunshots rang through the air, making Ludwig spring up from his cot. He hurried out of his tent and made sure to grab his Luger P08 pistol on his way out.

When he exited the tent, the sight he was met with made him stop dead in his tracks. A large flock of zombies had infiltrated their home base while they were asleep, and some of them had managed to find the tents.

Ludwig looked over and found almost everyone fighting with bite wounds and scratches. As he was paralyzed with fear, he didn't notice a pair of hands dragging him away from the chaos.

"Doitsu! Doitsu!"

As soon as Feliciano's panicked voice reached Ludwig's ears, he snapped back to reality.

"Ah, Italty! Are you ok!? None of them bit or scratched you, did they!?"

Tears began to brim at Feliciano's eyes as he looked over to everyone defending themselves. "N-No, but G-Germany everyone is going to di--"

"Nein, nein, don't you say that! We'll be just fine!"

Feliciano nodded hesitantly as Ludwig settled him behind some drooping foliage.

"Italy, here take this." Ludwig handed Feliciano his spare pistol and then turned to look back at some of his fallen comrades. All of them were infected with the dangerous disease now, and in the back of his mind he could hear his sub-conscious screaming the fact that soon they would join them.

Ludwig looked back at Feliciano as his ice-blue eyes met with Feliciano's amber eyes. A singe tear slowly slid down Ludwig's cheek as he smiled weakly.

"If anything happens to me, I want you to shoot me and put me out of my misery. Verstehen?"

Feliciano nodded as his tears soon fell down his cheeks, splashing onto his tattered, dirty uniform.

"I-I. . . Doitsu, I can't. . ."

Slowly, Ludwig brought his hand to Feliciano's face and ran his thumb over Feliciano's tears.

"Ja, you can. I want you too. . . So, do it for me."

Feliciano nodded before hugging his best friend tightly to his chest. Hesitantly, Feliciano finally let his friend go off and try and defend what little they had left.

He watched as Ludwig slowly kills off the monsters one by one. But, Feliciano was so caught up in the moment; he failed to notice all of them slowly closing in on Ludwig.

Before he knew it, one of them had sunken their teeth into Ludwig's shoulder, causing him to cry out loudly in pain.

"No! Doitsu, no!" Soon after the first bite, all of the zombies surrounding him began to join in on their personal cannibalistic buffet. Feliciano's anger and adrenaline began flowing through his veins as he raised Ludwig's pistol and began carelessly firing off round after round of raw, ammunition.

Feliciano was panting as smoke wafted through the air as he looked onto all the remains of his fallen allies. Everyone he knew and loved were gone and made into some sick meal. After he had finished slaying all of the zombies, he didn't have any tears left. He didn't even feel one single shred or sadness or mourn, for he felt he had saved them from a lifetime of suffering.

Feliciano went over all of his friend's bodies and slowly slid their eyelids shut. Soon, he stopped at the bodies of Ludwig and Romano. Two people he had cared for so dearly were dead and lying at his feet in a pool of flesh and blood.

"Your deaths will have not been in vain, I will avenge every single one of you even if it kills me in the process. . ."

"The last man of the world no longer wants to live-- he may cling to life as an individual, but as a type, as an aggregate, no, for it is a characteristic of this collective existence that it eliminates the terror of death."

-- Oswald Spengler
